Do you think cat mace smells like perfume to you?
A few weeks ago Rambo, our tuxedo cat, decided to start peeing on the dog beds.
I thought he was acting out because I had taken their food from being available all day to only available twice a day. This was to curb Elsa’s eating habit—she is getting quite large.

I decided to put the food back out, and everything was good for a few days, but one afternoon that cat urine smell appeared again on the dog beds. I pulled up the camera and sure enough, Rambo was at it again.
Then I ordered cat mace online. I sprayed it while my husband was doing yardwork, and let me tell you, it was potent. The smell was so strong I had to leave the fan on in the bedroom all day so we would be able to sleep come night.
The smell is kind of hard to describe—sort of a cross between cat urine and body odor. It was almost like a dragon pissed on the dog beds to warn any kitties they would be crispy snacks if they ever came over there again.
I join my husband outside, and we plant a few trees and work on the garden. I kept checking on the smell throughout the day, and was immensely relieved the smell was dissipating. I finish up the last tree for the day while my husband goes inside to start his shower.
After I finish, I walk into the bedroom and am overcome with that horrible cat mace smell. It was even more concentrated. Come to find out, my husband loved the smell, and sprayed even more on the dog beds. The stench was so thick I was gagging, even with the fan going full blast.
So I turned off the fan and waited for my husband to get out of the shower. By the time he walked into the bedroom the smell had permeated everything and he wrinkled his nose. “Maybe I did spray too much,” he admitted.
The fan went back on and we had a mini Netflix marathon while we waited for the smell to become bearable enough to sleep.
I endured the stench that night because I loved Rambo.
But did he love me back? Did he stop pissing on the dog beds?
Noooooo.
So now we are trying a cat pheromone plugin designed to relax cats and make them feel safe enough to not pee on things. Now to wait and see how that goes.
The things I endure for my kitties.
